DISCOVERING YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS
You are about to begin a process of discovering your spiritual gifts. As you reflect on the gifts you have tentatively identified through the questionnaire, try to discern which ones truly are, or are not, your gifts. To do so, follow this five-step approach:
1. EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES
Read through the three key chapters in the scriptures dealing with spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12, Rom. 12 and Eph. 4). Learn what the gifts are, what characterizes them and how they function in the Body of Christ, so that you can have something concrete to look for as you more ahead.
2. EXPERIMENT WITH AS MANY GIFTS AS POSSIBLE
The spiritual gifts analysis which you will be completing will help you experiment with different gifts. Your feelings, reactions and general outlook on the gifts will be measured as you work through the discovery questionnaire. You will need to experiment further with the gifts you will pinpointed in the analysis. Unless you try the gifts this analysis will reveal, you will have a hard time knowing whether you really have them or not. Get involved in a ministry activity that will let you try out those gifts.
3. EXAMINE YOUR FEELINGS
Since God has put the body together, you will feel fulfilled when functioning in the proper area. Thus, if you enjoy your attempts to use a particular gift, that is a good sign that you possess it. If, however, you dislike the service activities associated with a certain gift, that is a fairly good sign that you do not have it.
4. EVALUATE YOUR EFFECTIVENESS
Since spiritual gifts are designed to benefit others, you should see positive results as you use your gift(s). If you see no results when you experiment with a particular gift, you probably do not have that gift. But it could be that you did not give it a fair try, or that it will simply take time for you to learn to use the gift effectively. As you evaluate, pray for the courage to be honest with yourself and with your Lord.
5. EXPECT CONFIRMATION FROM THE BODY
You cannot discover, develop and use a gift all on your own. Gifts are given to build up other members of the Body. If you have a gift, other Christians will recognize it and confirm it. If you feel that you have a particular gift but no one else agrees with you, then you should take a closer look at yourself and re-evaluate.
These five steps are more fully explained in C. Peter Wagner’s book, Your Spiritual Gifts Can Help You Grow. Remember in all these five steps, the key is prayer. The Lord will lead you to accurate discoveries of your gift(s) if you allow Him to guide and direct you in all your endeavors.
TO WHOM AND HOW ARE SPIRITUAL GIFTS GIVEN?
1. Every believer is spiritually gifted
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve
others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms."
1 Pet. 4:10
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for the common good."
1 Cor. 12:7
"But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned
it."
Eph. 4:7-8
2. When he or she becomes a Christian
"For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one Body--whether
Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to
drink."
1 Cor. 12:13
3. With the gift(s) that God chooses for him or her
"All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he
gives them to each one, just as he determines. But in fact God has
arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted
them to be."
1 Cor. 12:11,18
Note: No one Christian has all the gifts nor is any one gift common to all Christians
"The body is a unit, though it is made up of many
parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is
with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether
Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to
drink. Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot
should say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,’ it
would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear
should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,’ it
would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole
body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole
body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God
has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he
wanted them to be."
1 Cor. 12:12-18
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS?
1. The glory of God in His church
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others,
faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone
speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If
anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so
that in all things God may be praise through Jesus Christ. To him
be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen."
1 Pet. 4:10-11
2. The building up of the body of Christ
"...to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the
body of Christ may be built up."
Eph. 4:12
3. The unity of the body
"...until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of
the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the
fullness of Christ."
Eph. 4:13
4. The maturity of the body
"Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the
waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the
cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead,
speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him
who is the Head, that is Christ."
Eph. 4:14-15
5. The growth of the body
"From him the whole body, joined and held together by every
supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part
does its work."
Eph. 4:16
6. The common good (for the good of the whole)
"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good."
1 Cor. 12:7

You are about to become involved in an exciting spiritual exercise. God has given you one or more spiritual gifts if you are a Christian, and discovering that gift or gifts will be a thrilling experience.
On the following pages you will be asked to answer 100 questions. Do not dwell on any one question for a long period of time. Simply read each question and answer it honestly and accurately on the answer sheet (You may want to print this out). The entire test should not take you more than 20-30 minutes.
Many believers have been blessed by taking a spiritual gift inventory test. This is a benefit to you and to the body. Do not regard the results of this test as final. The three or four gifts you score highest in may or may not be your real spiritual gifts. But you can be sure in any case that they are a starting point for prayer and experimentation. You will need other members of the body of Christ to help you confirm what gifts you have.
A good example is my wife Kathy who has taken this test and never scored anything close to a prophetic gifting and yet that gifting was lying dormant within her until God activated it a few years ago. I have found that my role in the body has determined what gifting God has activated in my life. There are dominant gifts but the others can change from time to time.
May God bless you richly as you begin this exciting endeavor.
